This is a Canadian progressive rock group which exists since 1986. I must admit that I didn’t know them until now. Progressive rock really appeals to me more than progressive metal. MYSTERY released their first 5 song EP back in 1992. Their first full length album was released in 1996 and it was called “Theatre of the Mind” while their second album was released in 1998 and it was called “Destiny”. The leader of the band created back in the mid ‘90s his own label called Unicorn Records in order to release MYSTERY’s albums. Benoit David the band’s singer is now the current vocalist of YES. 69 minutes of good progressive rock including the 22 minute suite “Through Different Eyes” is what you’ll get with “One Among the Living”, for which the band was joined by Daryl Stuermer (GENESIS, Phil Collins), Oliver Wakeman (YES, THE STRAWBS) and John Jowitt (FROST*, IQ, ARENA). The new CD is released as a digipack with a 28 page booklet, and follows the success of the 2007 release “Beneath the Veil Of Winter’s Face” and last year’s release of the 10th anniversary edition of “Destiny”. The album is really good and I would say that “Wolf”, “Between Love and Hate” “Sailing on a Wing” and the homonym track stand out. It seems that some groups like MYSTERY, ABARAX, TORMAN MAXT, RIVERSIDE and PALLAS keep the flame alive and I am happy for that!
P.S.: For the fans of other metal/rock genres I should say that the album needs a couple of times to be heard in order to be appreciated and understood.
P.S 2: Even though this blog republishes reviews which have already been posted at Behind The Veil webzine there might be some slight changes because some months may have past. This review had originally as a mark 8/10 but now I put 9/10 because as the months passed I started to like this album more and more…
