Here we have the first full length album of this German metal band. I came across ATLANTEAN KODEX in 2007 with their magnificent EP “Pnakotic Demos” which was re-released a month ago with some bonus tracks which were released up tiil now only on vinyl format also by Cruz Del Sur Records. ATLANTEAN KODEX were founded in 2006 in Germany and their members have participated in various bands. They also released two live albums and another EP in 2008 called “A Prophet in the Forest” which contains the song “Vesperal Hymn” which is now re-released. Their homonym song, which happens to be one of my favourites, and “A Prophet in the Forest” are also old songs and were first released on one of the live albums of the band. Their moniker has been influenced by the famous scientific book of the anthropologist James Frazer. For those who haven’t had the chance to listen to their music yet, we should say that their style has doom, epic and power metal influences. Even though they were influenced by bands like WARLORD, BATHORY and MANOWAR they have managed to form and have their own style. “The Golden Bough” is definitely good and must be bought by the fans of the aforementioned bands. The tracks that I enjoyed the most were “Fountain of Nepethe”, “Pilgrim”, the self titled track and the homonym of the band’s moniker (their “speed metal” song heh, heh, heh). I think this is one of the best albums of the year! The fans of these metal genres should get it right away while the ones who dislike slower should definitely give it a try even though the songs are slow! In my opinion they are one of the few groups that even though they play slow they really manage to capture the listener’s interest! I highly recommend the re-released version of “Pnakotic Demos” too, which I like even more!
